Playing Favourites at Chapel Street's Mr. Miyagi

We’ve been talking a lot lately about all the new Japanese restaurants to hit Melbourne this year, but don’t want to overshadow old favourites like Mr. Miyagi, which launched on Chapel Street, Windsor back in October 2013.

A contrast to the largely traditional Japanese eateries that have opened recently, Mr. Miyagi is fusion at its core. With dishes like Lamb Rendang Donuts and Salmon Nori Tacos on offer, this spot is not for purists.

But it does offer a fun, whimsical dining experience featuring signature Japanese flavours.

The menu also nods to Korean cuisine (take the creamy yellow curry with chewy rice cakes or the Ramen Gnocchi inspired by Korean American chef Dave Chang) as well as Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai.

If you don’t eat meat, there’s still plenty to choose from. The silken tofu served in chilli oil and topped with mushrooms is an obvious choice that won’t disappoint. The lightly fried broccoli topped with mountains of shaved cheese is also a hit.

Otherwise, there are plenty of fried (chicken), grilled (beef) and raw (seafood) proteins to pick from.

Dessert is not an afterthought at Mr. Miyagi. There are only two on the menu, but both are so loaded with different components that the options don’t feel lacking. If you must only choose one, the pumpkin toast (which is actually a toasted pumpkin loaf served with two types of frozen dessert) is a show-stopper.
