Mondo Gelateria Turns Elizabeth Street Into Its Own Little Constellation
Melbourne already treats gelato as a competitive sport, so opening a new shop in this city requires a certain level of confidence. Mondo Gelateria, the CBD’s latest frozen attraction, arrives not with bravado but with a quiet, well considered charm that suggests they know exactly what they are doing. And after tasting through the cabinet, it is clear they do.
Mondo sits inside a 150 year old building on Elizabeth Street, a space that could have easily slipped into the predictable. Instead, the designers at Aydnco Commercial Interiors chose restraint. They kept the heritage details intact, gave the walls a gentle dusty peach tone, and crowned the ceiling with a glowing sun shaped installation that feels like a warm invitation rather than a centrepiece demanding applause. It casts a soft halo across the room, giving the whole space an uplifting glow that makes gelato feel like a perfectly reasonable life choice at any hour.
The cabinet is where Mondo reveals its full personality. There is a sense of play, but not the kind that forgets technique. The pistachio is properly nutty, creamy and balanced, the kind of flavour that earns respect from people who care deeply about pistachio. The classics are handled with seriousness and a steady hand. Black Forest is rich with kirsch soaked cherries. Chocolate Fudge Brownie leans decadent without becoming heavy. Lemon Cheesecake brings roasted lemon cake and almond in a way that feels both fresh and familiar.
Then come the flavours that spark curiosity. Purple Rice is a standout, offering a gentle chew and a subtle sweetness that lands somewhere between comfort and surprise. Dulce Blood Orange is bright and spirited. Mango Sticky Rice honours the beloved dessert with coconut notes and little pockets of rice that make the bite more interesting than expected. There are flavours with toasted coconut, flavours with almond, flavours with soft ribbons of citrus or chocolate ripple. Mondo isn’t chasing novelty for its own sake; it is thinking through how flavour, texture and temperature can be coaxed into harmony.
The sorbets form their own colourful cast. Cassis Plum. Calamansi Plum. Lemon Chai. Mango Passionfruit. Pink Guava. Pear with elderflower and orange. Watermelon. They read like the fruit bowl of someone who refuses boredom. Anyone attempting to choose one flavour is immediately humbled. Thankfully, the team is well practiced in guiding indecisive people to three scoops instead of one.
The bar stretches the length of the room, mounded with gelato peaks and studded with fruits, pralines, chocolate shards and unexpected little accents. It is the kind of display that stops people mid stride. Even those who wander in for coffee find themselves lingering a little too long, silently negotiating whether a scoop at 9 AM is socially unacceptable or simply Melbourne doing Melbourne.
The space remains open until late, and while the DJs and cold brews add atmosphere, the gelato is the anchor. It is thoughtful, expressive and made with a sense of joy that feels genuine.
Mondo joins a city already spoiled for excellent gelato, yet somehow still finds something new to say. The best approach is to return often, try boldly and let the cabinet guide you. After all, there are many flavours to get through and absolutely no reason to rush.
