After a three-year break, celebrated English chef Michael Lambie is making his grand return to Melbourne’s food scene with Juni, a new Southeast Asian-inspired restaurant in the CBD. Opening in late November on Exhibition Street, Juni promises to be a love letter to Melbourne’s dynamic dining culture and a tribute to Lambie’s late mother, June, who passed away earlier this year.
Juni’s menu will focus on the flavours and textures of Southeast Asia, with Lambie’s signature touch. After leaving Melbourne in 2020 and selling his beloved Lucy Liu restaurant, Lambie is ready to get back into the kitchen and cook for his loyal Melbourne audience once again. “I left Melbourne because of COVID, but my heart has always been here,” he says.
The restaurant, named in honour of his mother, showcases Lambie’s passion for bold Asian flavours. He’s crafted a menu under the concept of ‘Fire and Spice,’ featuring dishes like Chinese roast duck, pot-roasted beef short rib, and rare tuna tataki. Vegetarian options include crispy fried eggplant with vegan red curry and lychees, ensuring there’s something for every palate.
Juni isn’t just about the food; it’s designed to be a versatile space where guests can enjoy everything from pre-theatre cocktails to late-night bites. The bar will serve an extensive selection of wines, beers, premium spirits, sake, and, of course, well-crafted cocktails. The 140-seat venue spans across the bar, dining area, and a mezzanine event space, with a single drinks and food menu covering all areas.
Lambie’s excitement is palpable: “I love the clean flavours of Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. I’m thrilled to create a menu that embraces these influences while catering to my loyal Melbourne customers. I’m committed to building a fantastic professional team and an amazing restaurant.”
Designed by Carlton-based studio Techne, Juni’s interior combines bold reds and pinks with greens and maroons, creating a lush and balanced environment that nods to both romance and the joyful energy of the streets. The venue, once a retail space, blends modern touches with authentic, street-style elements, mirroring the vibrancy of the menu. Lambie praises the design process as “a fantastic journey” and eagerly anticipates sharing the finished space with Melbourne’s diners.
Lambie’s impact on Melbourne’s food scene is undeniable. From his early days at Stokehouse and Circa to running Federation Square’s Taxi and co-owning Lucy Liu and The Smith, his influence has been significant. Now, with Juni, he’s ready to cook the food he loves for the city he calls home.
