Arc'teryx Unveils Future Trails: Revolutionising Trail Food with Edible Tableware

1 / 12

The Canadian outdoor apparel brand Arc'teryx is setting new standards with Future Trails. This innovative project, a collaboration with Melbourne’s sustainable material studio Other Matter and Tasmanian food innovator Rough Rice, promises to change the way outdoor enthusiasts experience nature. As part of Melbourne Design Week, the first phase of Future Trails will launch on 24 May at Melbourne's Southbank. This project introduces the world's first sustainable, nutritious trail food served with edible, ultralight, zero-waste tableware.

The Vision Behind Future Trails

Future Trails is more than a food innovation. It represents a commitment to sustainability and a reimagining of our relationship with nature. Hayden Stevens, Arc'teryx Marketing Manager for Australia and New Zealand, explains, “At Arc’teryx, our core belief is ‘there is always a better way.’ We’re incredibly proud to support this project, bringing sustainable, innovative solutions to the Australian outdoor community.”

Key Players: Other Matter and Rough Rice

Jessie French, founder of Other Matter, and Adam James, the mind behind Rough Rice, are the creative forces driving Future Trails. Other Matter is known for its work with algae-based bioplastics, aiming for a post-petrochemical, circular world. Rough Rice specialises in food innovation, fermentation, and waste management, blending traditional and modern techniques to create nutritious foods.

French highlights the environmental impact of traditional food packaging: “Food packaging is the largest source of plastic waste in our oceans, while over 40% of petrochemical plastics produced globally are dedicated to packaging. The detrimental impact is profound, threatening our environment, ecosystems, and human health. Future Trails has been a remarkable opportunity to develop a solution that keeps unsustainable materials off our trails.”

The Innovation

Future Trails utilises Other Matter’s algae-based bioplastics and Rough Rice’s locally sourced, fermented provisions to create a circular, zero-waste outdoor nutrition experience. Adam James reflects on the project: “Nature is a source of endless inspiration for me. This project has allowed me to bring together my two passions; the natural environment and food innovation. Future Trails redefines what outdoor food can and should be. Natural, nutritious, lightweight, and sustainable.”
