Step through the doors of Smith St Bistrot in Collingwood, and you’re instantly transported to a world of Belle Époque charm. Red leather booths through art-deco-inspired interiors, and an old-world aesthetic create a setting that feels both refined and inviting. This isn’t a replica of Parisian dining; it’s a thoughtful homage, with Melbourne’s relaxed sophistication woven throughout.

Our lunchtime visit centred on the “Dégustation du Chef”—a four-course journey priced at $130 per person. It’s an experience that invites you to pause, soak in the details, and relish each dish, and Smith St Bistrot excels at creating such moments.

The Beginning: Small Bites, Big Impact

The meal began with their olive bread with whipped butter, and then snacks such as Gouger au Comté, a golden puff of comté cheese that melted effortlessly in the mouth. Simple yet flawlessly executed, it was the perfect introduction.

Next came Oeufs Mayonnaise & Avruga Caviar. These devilled eggs, topped with avruga caviar, were indulgent without being heavy. The creamy yolk and delicate pop of caviar offered an elegant interplay of textures and flavours.

Scallops to Remember

Then out came the Coquille Saint Jacques. Grilled scallops, accented by vadouvan, wild garlic, and curry leaf, tender and aromatic. Each bite celebrated the beauty of fresh ingredients handled with care.

The Main Event

For mains, the Filet de Barramundi was a delight. Sourced from Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory, the fish was cooked to perfection, its flaky texture contrasted with the perfectly crunchy skin. Complemented by broad beans, a beurre blanc sauce and salmon roe bursting with each bite.

Equally impressive was the Steak au Poivre. A Sher Wagyu rostbiff, paired with earthy mushroom duxelles and a rich peppercorn sauce that delivered on every level. Fries and a crisp cos salad with buttermilk and cucumber added balance and crunch, rounding out the course beautifully.

We had to run before dessert as my friend was test driving a Tesla that afternoon so we missed out on their Mousse au Chocolat - which I’m sure would have been a delight.

Smith St Bistrot’s ethereal art-deco setting, attentive service, and Scott Pickett’s homage to French classics—infused with influences from dining across Europe—make it a destination for those seeking an elevated lunch experience. Whether it’s a leisurely meal with friends or a midweek indulgence, this bistro delivers.

The Dégustation du Chef offers exceptional value for a refined experience that lingers well after the final bite.
