Vegie Bar is Fitzroy’s famous vegetarian/vegan restaurant. They have a great selection of international cuisines on the menu, and all dishes are vegetarian so you can have an ethical conscious and a healthy breakfast, lunch or dinner. Sorry about the terrible flash photos, the lighting at night time isn’t great for photos!
Vegie Bar has a rustic warm atmosphere combined with the indie Fitzroy vibe. We had to cross our fingers to get a seat, as the place is always full. We were lucky and got offered a seat at the shared bench. Picking a dish was exciting and challenging as there were so many different dishes to choose from!
We decided to get gyoza and sangrias to start. The sangrias were small but flavoursome and had delicious strawberries in them, fairly cheap too. There were three bite sized gyoza’s for the entree. They were steamed, and had two dipping sauces, chilli salsa and the classic soy sauce. They were nice, but I would much prefer to get my dumplings from an asian dumpling house.
As a main I got the gado gado, and Lexie got the vermicelli. The gado gado was pretty much a jungle on a plate. Full of long coriander leaves, sprouts, tofu, pumpkin, red pepper, cauliflower, peanuts, zuccini and i’m sure i’ve missed a vegetable in there some how. It came with peanut sauce which added some flavour to the dish. Apart from the sauce, the dish was pretty one-dimensional, just a mountain of steamed/fresh veggies. Lexies vermicilli had a great flavour in comparison. Food envy, again. The vermicelli was well cooked, and had a beautiful light flavour and fresh ingredients.
My previous visits, I had a pizza and mee goreng, which I was much more satisfied. With such a variety of cuisines available, choose your dish carefully. Reasonable pricing and great vibe, so can’t complain. This is a great place to come with friends, or a date, or a date with friends… even if you’re not vegetarian.
